Chapter 3

Carrie slipped on her robe and opened her from door to grab the paper. She nodded at a neighbor and unfolded the Times, eyeing the cover.

‘Billionaire Calvin Vanderbilt Still Missing in Wake of Steele Murder.’

She spent the morning in her robe. She made breakfast, considered going to the coffee shop, then took the elevator to her car instead. She drove to work, thought better of it, and found herself on the interstate heading East.

It was dusk when she pulled into the small mountain town. It had been only days, but it sat firmly in her memory and her heart beat faster at the familiar sights.

As if by instinct she found herself pulling off the road onto the dirt track to the cabin where it all started. She expected nothing – no miracles, no wishes granted – she just needed somewhere to think.

How had everything gotten so crazy?

She parked the car, slipped on her black leather gloves, and opened the door. Her boot’s crunched on the snow, and she frowned when she saw her own footprints next to Calvin’s leading up the house. They disappeared into a shuffle where they had their last kiss. She paused for a moment. Snow fell on her hair, gathering in tiny snowflakes on her shoulders in the wool of her coat. She brushed it off and stepped up the porch, stamping her feet.

She slid the doormat to one side and found the spare key, which she used to unlock the door. She felt it *click* open in her hand, and paused for another moment, remembering her first time to the cabin. She hadn’t known what to expect from a man living in such a place – insanity was definitely on the list.

She had never expected him to be so handsome, so full of life and so… down to Earth.

The cabin was just how they’d left it, down to the mess of blankets they had made on their last night together. The fire was cold and black, and she considered lighting it for a moment before turning to the shelf beside her.

She picked up a picture. It was Calvin, alone – like always. He was standing in a bright field and his face was all grind. Oh how we’ve fallen. She set it back down carefully, but when her heart started to pain she turned it away.

There was a book on the dresser and she picked it up. It was dog-eared to a passage he had read to her. She traced the words with a finger, and once again she had to put it down. Suddenly overwhelmed she made for the door, tripping over a wooden stool and throwing the screen door open and tramping onto the simple porch.

Then she froze.

Standing at the edge of the clearing before the cabin was Calvin.

She squinted as if he was a mirage, but after several seconds he did not disappear and her vision wavered.

Then he smiled.

“Carrie?” he called out.

They were close within seconds. He reached for her but she struck his chest, hard.
